The Highlight Of My Day

I have a co-worker who highlights EVERYTHING.

You give her a list, she reads it and then goes back to highlight the important parts. Give her a calendar, she reads it, then goes back to highlight the important parts.

All that's good, except that she winds up highlighting EVERYTHING.

I've thought about asking her about it. I've thought I should probably point out that highlighting everything is really just the same as highlighting nothing at all. I mean, if you've just turned every word on the page yellow, nothing really stands out, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of that magical highlighter technology.

This particular coworker is getting a bit advanced in years, so I thought that she was perhaps highlighting everything in order to see it better, but I the other day I found a document in a file from like 1980 that she'd highlighted the crap out of, so that ain't it.

Thus far I've been able to restrain myself and, miraculously, haven't teased her about her colorful hobby. I'm also fighting the temptation to see what would happen if I hid the highlighters for a day or two. (Mostly that out of fear, not kindness, because I witnessed first hand the madness that ensued last year when a tape dispenser went missing. We literally had to lock down the building until it turned up unharmed).

Yeah. Exactly.

Does she always use yellow? I'd switch up the colors and just for the hell of it- I'd hide 'em.

Best of luck to you!

You must do this, it is a moral imperative, then you must carefully record the results and report them here.
It has to be done, be brave.

dang it, betty stole my suggestion. i'd want to test her connection to the color yellow. each day hide them and bring out a new color. see what happens.

Yep! I think you should hide them, just to see her reaction. (You can always give them back later) lol
Are we mean people?

Hmmm, she must be bored. Needs. More. Things. To. Do.

Oh! Please hide them. If you don't I'll cry. You don't want to make me cry do you?

And you should leave little clues all over the place as to where she can find them. Then you're not being too mean. It's more like a game.

Y'all are a mean batch of people!
(And that makes me very happy).

We have a staff meeting next week, and we always get lots of new papers to highlight. I'll hide them then and report back!

Bummer! Obsessive compulsive coworkers are definitely a drag. Well, at least she doesn't make multiple copies of all the highlighted pages, just to make sure you can always find them. Or maybe she does. Hey! Maybe she's the person who had my job before me. They did just that!

My summer psych professor (brain research expert) actually has data on highlighting being, not only a poor learning tool, but possibly damaging as well.....hmmmmm....so, being the good friend that you are, would actually be saving her from possible neuron connection issues! hehehe (don't ask for clarification...not a psych major!)

Gadzooks! Highlighting is psychologically damaging?!?! Who knew? Anyone want to start a class action lawsuit against the big, ruthless highlighter manufacturers? :-)

my six year old daughter asked for her very own higlighter the other day. I think highlighter madness is something you're just born with.

I have loads of highlighter pens, all different colours. I thought they might help me when I was studying. The problem was that I didn't use them. I tried, but the bits I highlighted were never the bits I wanted when I was going over stuff again. I gave up. I am very happy to know that by doing so I avoided brain damage.

I use different coloured pens, though, for my class notes when I'm teaching. Blue or black for ordinary notes. Red for stuff I have to remember to do later. Green for stuff I'll be using in a test later. Pink or orange just for the hell of it, or when I pick them up by mistake. (I keep forgetting to throw those ones out - they're uselessly faint.)

But now I want to know: Is using different coloured pens going to damage my brain? Please let me know ASAP. (Although it may already be too late.)
